VILLA LM

New build | Modern | Villa | Netherlands

The villa's design features a main structure of natural stone slabs interspersed with spacious glass windows, in a concave shape facing the countryside. On top of this is an inverted roof shape that catches the light like a 'chalice' and brings it into the interior of the house. A combination of lower, warm

and cozy interior spaces surrounded by high spaces with sloping roof surfaces that bring spaciousness and light into the home with views of the surrounding nature.

The house is located on the transition line between forest and field. The characteristics of the forest—sheltered, dense, closed—and the field—open, light, transparent—are reflected in the design of the house itself. The forest side is more closed in character and is embedded in the landscape by means of embankments against a natural stone retaining wall, with an opening at the entrance. From the forest side, the house is inconspicuously placed in the greenery, a modest appearance with natural materials.

The field side has an open character with plenty of light and views. In line with the radials, which have the heart of the field with the water feature (the gathering place for water birds and animals) as their center, robust discs have been placed to support the sloping roof shape. The roof shape opens up to the sky and offers maximum light and views of nature.

The house faces the open countryside and, when viewed from the field, is positioned on the meandering dividing line with the forest behind it. The existing forest adjacent to the building site consists of mature trees with large crowns, varying in height between 15 and 25 meters. Due to its striking, unambiguous roof shape, single-story with a height between 4.6 and 5 meters, the house forms a subtle balance in terms of scale and size with
the forest behind it.

The materialization of the basement of the house consists of earthy, robust materials: natural stone and concrete. The slightly curved, floating roof is constructed entirely of wood, both in terms of the finish and the supporting structure, and its materialization references the wooded setting.

Light, air, sightlines, and a strong connection with nature are the fundamental themes in both the exterior and interior of this unique home.
