COUNTRY HOUSE HEELWEG
NEW CONSTRUCTION | MODERN | COUNTRY HOUSE | NETHERLANDS
This spacious, modern country house is located in the rural countryside near Heelweg (in the province of Gelderland) and focuses on the beautiful view all around. By placing it in the middle of the large grounds, which are landscaped as a private park, between the surrounding meadows, we have created a design that focuses on this view on all sides. The materials and colors used are understated and serve the design concept without taking center stage.
A characteristic feature of the building's shape is the rim that runs around it, serving as both a sunshade and a canopy under which you can enjoy the outdoor space in the shade. This element gives the design its powerful horizontal character. The rim is clad with stone strips cut from the same facing bricks used for the normal facade. This gives the rim a monolithic and tranquil character.
Floor-to-ceiling glass fronts have been installed beneath the continuous edge around the perimeter to minimize the barrier between inside and outside. Sliding doors around the house provide access to the surrounding garden. Sightlines that have been made as long as possible in the interior are not obstructed by solid exterior walls but are extended to the surrounding outdoor area through the efficient placement of the exterior window frames.
A large part of the country house has a basement. The basement receives daylight through a sloping ground level. This sloping ground level also ensures that the basement is accessible from the outside.
The roof, which is slightly raised above the horizontal edge, folds like an origami artwork over the underlying program, with the gables facing all wind directions and providing access to the roof terraces. To emphasize the simplicity of the folded roof shape, the materials and details have been designed to be as understated as possible. The gutters are integrated into the roof shape and the roof is covered with anthracite-colored ceramic interlocking tiles.
The interior is characterized by the connection between the different spaces. This can be seen in the sightlines that have been created, but also in the voids that connect the vertical spaces in some places. This allows the full extent of the house to be experienced without compromising its sense of security. Inside, a calm and timeless color scheme has been chosen that serves the overall concept. A special element in this is the acoustic wooden ceiling of the folded roof construction. Thanks to the open connections, this element helps to improve the acoustics, thereby enhancing the feeling of security.
The entire home, both inside and out, features a sophisticated lighting plan in which subtle spotlights provide accent lighting and decorative fixtures create an atmospheric interior. Functionality goes hand in hand with atmosphere, partly thanks to the intelligent control of the home automation system. The country house is equipped with a KNX system that integrates all installation components. This also optimizes energy consumption. Energy is generated partly by the environmentally friendly pallet stove and partly by the 135 solar panels installed in a separate part of the plot. The house is not connected to the utility grid for its energy needs.
