OVP ACTIVITY CENTER
In mid-2009, Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission) launched a competition for a new Nature Activity Center in the Oostvaardersplassen. This design was created in collaboration with an ecologist and landscape architect. The activity center is located on the edge of the forest, overlooking the Oostvaardersveld. The building blends in with its surroundings and has no front or back. The boundary between inside and outside is only recognizable by a thin glass facade. The program takes place both inside and outside, both in and on the building. The fusion with the environment is not only physical in nature but also increases the mental connection with nature. Ecology is an integral part of the building. Through earthworks and green roofs, the building creates new ecosystems that can be experienced directly and incorporated into the routing. The main shape with sloping roofs minimizes energy requirements and allows the building to function self-sufficiently. The building has an open floor plan, making it completely flexible in terms of layout. Sustainable materials that are close to nature complete the picture.
